CHAPTER SIX

‘I’M JUST about ready to put the worktop in place,’ Casey said, ‘and then it’ll really look as though you have a proper kitchen.’ He looked around the room with satisfaction. ‘It’s coming on, don’t you think?’

‘It looks much better than I ever imagined,’ Amber agreed. She handed him a mug of coffee, then stood beside him and looked at the neat units that made up her kitchen. ‘I’m really grateful to you for all that you’ve done. You’ve worked so hard these last few days and it can’t have been easy for you. After all, you put in a full day in A and E before you come here, and this must be the fourth day in a row. I don’t know how you have the stamina to keep it up.’

‘The same goes for you.’ He took a sip of the hot liquid. ‘You haven’t been sitting around with your feet up, have you? While I’ve been working, you’ve been fixing tiles in the bathroom and painting the woodwork throughout the house. You’ve made a really good job of it.’

‘Thanks. Actually, the tiling wasn’t my handiwork. It’s not something I’ve done before, fixing tiles, and I was nervous that I wouldn’t get it right. I made a start just after the new bathroom had been fitted, but Nick happened to come along that day, and he took over from me. To be honest, I don’t think he thought much of my efforts, and he decided it needed to be done properly.’

Casey laughed. ‘You’re telling me that our boss actually came here and fitted your tiles?’

She nodded. ‘I told him that I would be able to manage, but he took no notice, and I was worried about him getting his clothes messed up. He was wearing really good trousers and a jacket, but he just took the jacket off and rolled up his shirtsleeves and got on with it.’

‘I’m amazed. He’s done a really good job.’

‘Yes. I’m more than pleased with the finish. He said that he used to go around with his father, overseeing the properties that he had bought, and his father would always take an active part in the renovations. To be honest, I think it was more of a hobby with Nick. He said that it takes his mind off the everyday trauma that we see at the hospital.’

‘Why did he come along here in the first place? Do you and he have something going?’

‘Good heavens, no.’ Amber couldn’t help the quick flush of heat that ran along her cheekbones. ‘He just came to make sure that everything was moving along all right. He wanted to check that everything is going to plan.’

In truth, she had been startled to see Nick arrive on her doorstep, but he had been perfectly relaxed and there had been no hint that anything had gone on between them. He had said that he had told his father he would keep an eye on things, and that was how it seemed.
